Every year, Christopher Street Day commemorates the rights of lesbians, gays, bisexuals, transgender and queer people. They always turn the day into a colorful celebration - including in Leipzig.

Christopher Street Day (CSD) in Leipzig is celebrating its 32nd edition this year. To kick off the CSD week, the rainbow flag was hoisted at the New Town Hall - alongside the flags of the EU, Leipzig and Ukraine. Until August 17, numerous events such as films, workshops, lectures and discussions will be offered daily under the motto "We choose diversity".

Social Minister Petra Köpping (SPD) said: "Everyone should be allowed to love as they wish - regardless of whether they live in the Ore Mountains, Dresden, Leipzig, Chemnitz or the Mulde Valley. And we want to stand up and fight for this together, not only at CSD, but also in everyday life."

The highlight on August 17 will be a rally on Augustusplatz with a demonstration and a street festival. According to the organizers, around 18,000 people attended the demonstration last year. The Pride Ball at the Täubchenthal venue will also conclude the week of events this year.

Christopher Street Day takes place every year in many cities around the world and commemorates events on June 28, 1969: police officers stormed the Stonewall Inn gay and lesbian bar on Christopher Street in New York, triggering several days of protests by gays, lesbians and transsexuals. The CSD is intended to commemorate the rights of lesbians, gays, bisexuals, transgender, intersex and queer people.
