Diaconia is calling for donations for homeless people. "The massive lack of affordable housing in Germany becomes particularly apparent in the winter months. This is not the only reason why it is difficult for many of those affected to escape homelessness," explained the social service of the Protestant church. Personal fate, illness or unemployment are often obstacles on the way to a new home.
According to Diakonie, more than 3,600 people sought help at its advice centers alone last year. "A apartment is a place of protection, a home - a bank is not. Nobody wants to live in hardship, misery, fear and exclusion," emphasized Rotraud Kießling, the responsible officer at Diakonie Sachsen. Donations are needed to maintain and expand services in day care centers and advice centers. Existing services such as street social work are far from sufficient.
"Legally, every local authority is obliged to accommodate homeless people. Nobody has to live on the street. We need more easily accessible counseling services and sufficient time to build trust with those affected and improve their situation in the long term," asked Diakonie CEO Dietrich Bauer for support.
