Adults who have problems with reading and writing are to find help in seven new basic education centers in Saxony in the future. The facilities will be located in rural areas.

Seven new basic education centers in Saxony are to help adults with reading and writing difficulties. These centers will be tested as models and scientifically monitored until the end of 2026, as announced by the Saxon State Ministry of Culture. The facilities are to be set up in rural areas in the districts of Leipzig, North Saxony, Erzgebirgskreis, Zwickau, Vogtlandkreis, Görlitz and Sächsische Schweiz-Osterzgebirge.

People who have problems with reading and writing and their relatives will find advice and learning opportunities there, it said. Cooperation with local social services will also be strengthened.

Funding from the EU and the Free State of Saxony

The European Union is reportedly funding the project with around 1.2 million euros and the Free State of Saxony with just under one million euros. The Ministry of Culture is providing 100,000 euros annually over three years for scientific support. According to the state ministry, around 300,000 people in Saxony cannot read and write well enough, and everyday arithmetic can also be difficult.
