The Sorbs are the smallest Slavic people living in Lusatia. Bilingual street signs are a common sight there. In Bautzen, more and more stores are now pointing out this special feature.

The Sorbian language is to receive greater attention in Bautzen. This cause is now supported by ten business owners who advertise their offers in the city center in two languages, as the city administration announced on Monday. A children's fashion store, a shoe store, a tailor's shop and a flower and wine store are among the businesses involved. According to the information, they have labeled shop windows in Sorbian or put up bilingual signs at the entrance to the store. The city sees the campaign as a significant contribution to preserving the language and culture of the Slavic minority in Lusatia.

In October 2023, the city council of Bautzen adopted a concept to make Sorbian more visible in public spaces. Saxony's Ministry of the Interior provided funding of 5,000 euros for the initiative. Last spring, the first four businesses received a plaque in recognition of their commitment. Now six supporters have been added. Meanwhile, the city administration is hoping that other restaurateurs, traders and businesses will join the campaign.

Sorbian institutions are based in Bautzen, including the Domowina publishing house, the Sorbian National Ensemble, the Sorbian Institute and the Sorbian Museum at Ortenburg Castle. According to official estimates, a total of around 60,000 people make up the Sorbs and Wends in eastern Saxony and southern Brandenburg.
