Joke about Dresden bridges: Union Berlin offends in tone

The PR team of Bundesliga soccer club 1. FC Union Berlin has caused a stir on social media with an apparently joking comment about Dresden bridges. "Half an hour gone. Defensively more stable than any Saxon bridge. Keep it up, lads!" wrote a club employee on the X platform during the first half of the match at RB Leipzig. In the end, the two teams drew 0-0.

Almost two hours later, the Berliners realized that they had made an off-tone comment about the collapse of Dresden's Carola Bridge on Wednesday. Union apologized to the people of Dresden and the city of Dresden, explaining that the comment had been "a bit over the top in the heat of the moment".

A section of the Carola Bridge over the Elbe collapsed in Dresden early on Wednesday morning. No one was injured. On Friday, another section collapsed during demolition work.
