RB Leipzig is taking action against a spectator following an alleged anti-Semitic incident. During the cup match against FC St. Pauli (4:2), a fan is alleged to have shown the so-called Hitler salute. This was first reported by "Bild".
"RB Leipzig was informed by several fans the day after the DFB Cup match against FC St. Pauli that a spectator at the match had allegedly shown the so-called Hitler salute. A short time later, a spectator submitted a photo documenting the incident," RB told the German Press Agency when asked.
Through "an additional person and seat description", a spectator was quickly identified as the suspected perpetrator. All available video footage from the surveillance cameras has already been analyzed, but it has not been possible to clarify the events beyond doubt, the statement continued.
RB demands statement and threatens stadium ban
RB has handed over all of the available material to the police and is supporting further investigations. "RB Leipzig also encourages all witnesses to the incident to press charges". The person involved was asked to make a statement under threat of a nationwide stadium ban and was summoned at short notice. RB has recently supported nationwide campaigns for diversity and tolerance on several occasions.
In the past, the club has reacted consistently to similar incidents, such as the racist remarks made by the U-19s in January. RB immediately parted ways with the players. "RB Leipzig takes a clear stance against racism, xenophobia, discrimination and anti-Semitism and resolutely opposes anti-constitutional and inhuman behavior," the club announced.
