The SPD's designated lead candidate in Saxony, Petra Köpping, wants to win over voters with trust and reliability. She is convinced that experience will play an important role in the state elections next September, the 65-year-old told the German Press Agency. "In the current crisis-ridden times, people want trust and reliability."

At the SPD state party conference in Neukieritzsch (Leipzig district) on Saturday, she will be the only candidate for the post. In the 2019 state election, the SPD achieved its worst result to date with 7.7% of the second votes, compared to 12.4% in 2014. In the current coalition, it is the smallest government partner after the CDU and the Greens. Köpping is currently Minister of Social Affairs and Health in the state government.
