Should the child go to grammar school or secondary school after elementary school? Primary school pupils in Saxony receive their recommendation for secondary school with their last half-year report.

At the start of the winter vacations in Saxony, around 34,200 Saxon primary school pupils in year 4 will receive their educational recommendation for a secondary school. Their parents have until March 7 to register their children at a school of their choice, according to the Ministry of Education. Last school year, around 75 percent of parents followed the educational recommendation given.

"Trusting the professional assessment of teachers is always the right way to go," said Minister of Education Conrad Clemens (CDU). He also emphasized that the decision to be made does not set the children's future path in stone: "In Saxony, there is no one-way street when it comes to educational paths. All doors are open to pupils, regardless of which school they choose". What matters is that the child's best interests and abilities are at the heart of the decision.

More than half recently recommended for grammar school

In the 2023/2024 school year, 52.3 percent of primary school pupils received a recommendation for grammar school and 47.7 percent for secondary school.

According to the ministry, a recommendation for grammar school is issued if the average grade in the subjects German, mathematics and general studies in the half-year information is 2.0 or better and none of these subjects was graded "sufficient" or worse.
