In certain areas of Saxony's schools, people without a degree and with a vocational qualification are to be employed as teachers in order to alleviate the teacher shortage. "We will adapt the recruitment decree," said Culture Minister Conrad Clemens (CDU) in an interview with the "Leipziger Volkszeitung" newspaper. "This means that we can address new target groups for employment at our schools."
The minister mentioned the areas of swimming lessons, art, music and sport at primary and secondary schools. "This is a far-reaching step. Anyone who does not have a teaching degree but is a lifeguard or has a B trainer's license can help out in swimming or sports lessons."
New group will receive the same entry support as lateral entrants
This group will receive the same entry support as lateral entrants and also certain qualification opportunities, according to Clemens. "My goal is to be able to expand recruitment in this way as early as the next school year."
In Saxony, there is a shortage of almost 1,400 teachers to fully cover the planned teaching. This is around 200 more than in 2023/24, as the Ministry of Education recently announced. This means that only around 95% of the teaching planned according to the timetable is covered. "I would like to improve the teaching provision in schools for the next school year," said Clemens.
