Director Miriam Tscholl is to take over as artistic director of Leipzig's Theater der Jungen Welt (TDJW) from August 2025. According to a statement from the city council on Monday, the selection committee has decided in favor of the Freiburg-born director. A total of 31 applications were received. Tscholl, co-founder of the "Bürgerbühne" at the Staatsschauspiel Dresden, will succeed TDJW director Winnie Karnofka, subject to the approval of the city council, with a contract for an initial five years.

Tscholl studied architecture and cultural studies and has been working as a theater director since 2004. In 2009, she founded the Dresden "Bürgerbühne", which she also directed until 2018, and the European Citizens' Stage Festival. Since 2020, she has been working freelance with a focus on children's and youth theater.

According to the city hall, the TDJW is the oldest children's and youth theater in the German-speaking world and has won awards as one of the most renowned German theaters for young audiences. Every year, there are around 550 performances in show and puppet theater as well as dance, and around ten new productions and projects are staged each season.
