The Lausitz Festival aims to establish itself as a cultural institution in the coal-mining region - and seems to be well on its way to doing so.

More people have visited the Lausitz Festival this year than ever before. With around 60 events in ten categories and 22 sold-out performances, the Lausitz Festival celebrated "its most successful edition to date", according to a statement from the organizers. The overall occupancy rate was around 85 percent and corresponded to an audience of around 10,200.

The fifth edition of the European arts festival under the motto "Anderselbst" (Different Self) offered various cultural events in southern Brandenburg and eastern Saxony from 24 August to 14 September - from classical concerts to jazz, theater, dance, film, literature, song recitals and philosophical talks.

Festival highlights included a scenic reading by Czech author Radka Denemarková at Görlitzer Bahnhof and a concert by Venezuelan pianist Gabriela Montero.
