The explosive match in the 3rd soccer league between FC Hansa Rostock and Dynamo Dresden was interrupted for around 28 minutes due to rioting by spectators. With the score at 1:0 for Hansa, Dresden fans had apparently unfurled an unauthorized poster during half-time, leading to clashes with the police. After the interruption, the match continued.
The police intervention in the Dynamo block was due to the unveiling of the banner. The poster was removed. The content of the banner was initially unknown. The Dresden supporters responded to the action by throwing fireworks in the direction of the police. Dynamo captain Stefan Kutschke tried to mediate, but was held back by stewards.
Escalation on the pitch
This heated up the atmosphere in the stands - and also on the pitch. Players and officials briefly went at each other. The situation later calmed down again.
The spectators were asked over the stadium loudspeakers to refrain from any provocation, be it by leaving their assigned block or using pyrotechnics. They were also threatened with the immediate abandonment of the match in the event of further rioting.
