In Saxony, there are just under 223 doctors in practices for every 100,000 inhabitants. This puts the Free State in the middle of the field nationwide, according to an analysis by the National Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians (KBV), which is available to the German Press Agency. At state level, Hamburg is at the top with 310.3 doctors, while Brandenburg is at the bottom with 201.3 doctors and psychotherapists per 100,000 inhabitants.
The average age of doctors in Germany remained stable at 54.5 years, according to the data from the Federal Register of Doctors as of December 31, 2024. In Saxony, it is only 52.5 years (the lowest figure in Germany). In addition, only 7.9 percent are older than 65. This is the second youngest figure behind Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania (7.5 percent). In Saarland, the figure is 15.5 percent.
According to the analysis, the number of doctors in practices across Germany has continued to increase, as has the trend towards part-time work. At the end of last year, there were 189,551 doctors and psychotherapists licensed to provide care to people with statutory health insurance - 2,110 more than at the end of 2023. The average proportion of part-time work across all specialist groups rose from 35.8 percent to 37.9 percent.
