Alcohol problems remain the most common reason why people seek out addiction counseling centers in Saxony. As the State Office against Addiction Dangers announced on Monday, almost half of all consultations last year were about alcohol. In 2022, the proportion was just as high at 48 percent.
In addition, 73 percent of all patients treated in hospitals for addiction problems had an alcohol-related disorder. This figure also remained at the same high level as the previous year.
Experts expect increase in cannabis problems
Addiction experts have also observed a continuous rise in the number of people coming to advice centers for problems with cannabis over the past ten years. Last year, 15 percent of consultations revolved around this topic (previous year: 14 percent). Due to the planned partial legalization of cannabis, a further increase is to be expected, according to the state office.
Crystal a problem in prisons
Crystal addiction problems, on the other hand, are declining slightly. 14 percent of counseling sessions dealt with methamphetamine (previous year: 15 percent). Crystal is a major issue, especially in addiction counseling in prisons.
In total, addiction help was offered to almost 45,000 people in 2023. Around 18,000 of them received inpatient acute care, 25,000 were outpatient care cases. In addition, 1740 addiction-specific services were registered in Saxony's prisons.
