Alstom wins contract to supply and maintain 90 local trains in the Rhineland, secures industrial jobs in the long term

Train manufacturer Alstom has been awarded a major contract for the delivery and maintenance of 90 commuter trains for the S-Bahn in the Rhineland. "This is really good news. Here in Saxony, the billion-euro order means that many important industrial jobs will be secured in the long term," said Saxony's Minister President Michael Kretschmer (CDU). Accordingly, the order worth more than four billion euros includes not only delivery but also maintenance over a period of three decades.

Long-term safeguarding of the Bautzen site

Kretschmer pointed out that final production and testing are planned in Bautzen. According to the company, production for the order will also run for a longer period until 2033. This will further strengthen the traditional location of Bautzen. "This will also have a positive impact on the entire business location and on other companies and service providers in the region," continued Kretschmer.

Alstom wrote on Wednesday: "The S-Bahn in the Rhineland is to be made fit for the future with new vehicles that are 150 and 170 meters long." Following a Europe-wide tendering process, the two local rail passenger transport authorities involved, go.Rheinland and Verkehrsverbund Rhein-Ruhr (VRR), have decided that vehicle manufacturer Alstom will build a total of up to 90 new vehicles.

The first new S-Bahn trains are scheduled to go into trial operation on routes in the Rhineland and Ruhr region from mid-2029.
