Dismantling of a 150-meter-high tower in Leipzig has begun

The dismantling of a 150-metre-high chimney has begun at the site of the former Gusswerke Leipzig (formerly Halberg-Guss). A so-called spider excavator is removing the tower from top to bottom, as a spokeswoman for the responsible Hagedorn Group said on Tuesday in response to an inquiry. The work should be completed by the summer. An initially planned demolition of the chimney had been rejected for economic reasons.

Gusswerke Leipzig had filed for insolvency proceedings in 2019. A search for investors was unsuccessful. The company's 130-year history came to an end in September 2020. The company, which previously employed 400 people, was wound up. In February 2022, Hagedorn took over the 150,000 square metre site and is responsible for the demolition, disposal, remediation and revitalization of the area. An investor will later build a business park there.
