The IG Metall list has received a clear majority in the new works council election at the Volkswagen plant in Zwickau. 88.55 percent of the votes cast went to their list, IG Metall Zwickau announced. This means 33 of the 37 mandates. According to the information, voter turnout was just under 70 percent.
The new election was called after the works council announced its resignation in October 2024. The aim was to prevent a period without a works council in the current difficult times for the company. The Zwickau site has switched completely to electric cars, with demand for the vehicles falling short of expectations.
The reason for the new election is an ongoing legal dispute regarding the 2022 works council election. Employees who stood in the last election on a rival list to IG Metall filed a lawsuit. The dispute is before the Federal Labor Court. In the opinion of the Zwickau Labor Court and the Regional Labor Court, the election was invalid. According to the judges, essential provisions of the election procedure had been violated. However, the courts had only declared the election invalid, not null and void. According to the information provided, this would have rendered all actions of the previous body invalid.
