Minister of Agriculture Georg-Ludwig von Breitenbuch (CDU) believes that Saxony is well equipped for the trend towards more organic products. Plant-based products in particular are in high demand on the growing organic market, he said in a statement at the opening of the BioOst trade fair in Leipzig. According to the report, sales in this area rose by six to seven percent last year.
"Saxon farmers are well-positioned here, as they can produce consistent quantities and good quality." The aim is to continue to promote organic farming and conventional cultivation at a high level.
Organic in demand again
The reluctance to buy due to the energy crisis has reportedly been overcome. "The organic market has left the dip in sales behind," said von Breitenbuch. His ministry reports increased demand, particularly in the retail and discount sectors. There are also more and more customers in organic stores.
The BioOst trade fair focuses on organic food and natural drugstore products as well as young and regional companies. Nationwide suppliers and wholesalers are represented. There will also be regional offers.
From pasta to miso: organic companies from Saxony
A total of 18 organic companies from Saxony will be represented at the joint Saxon stand - more than ever before, according to von Breitenbuch. "From pasta and pasta flour to ice cream and chocolate, coffee and lemonades to kimchi and miso, Saxony's organic producers will be showcasing their wide range of products and their wealth of innovation and ideas," he said.
In 2024, just under 10 percent of agricultural land in Saxony was farmed organically, according to the press release. Compared to the previous year, the area increased by 2,900 hectares to around 89,500 hectares. 121 organic farms process their products close to the farm. A total of around 1,500 companies are currently active in the sector in Saxony.
