The renovation of the Königshain tunnel on the A4 has been delayed. Normal operations could only be resumed once the tests have been completed in the spring.

The renovation of the Königshainer Berge tunnel on the Autobahn 4, which has been ongoing since April, is expected to continue until the end of February. "The associated closure of one tunnel tube will also remain in place until then," announced the federal highway company. The reason for the delay is unexpected problems with the rock excavation work that was necessary for the expansion of the emergency call niches. The schedule therefore had to be adjusted.

The work on the emergency call niches has now been completed. Further expansion of the tunnel's technical systems is now scheduled to take place by the end of February. All systems will then be gradually put into operation and tested, it was reported. Since work began in the spring, traffic in both directions has been routed through the remaining tunnel tube in a single-lane contraflow.

At 3281 meters long, the Königshainer Berge tunnel is the third-longest freeway tunnel in Germany. It was opened in 1999. According to Autobahn GmbH, around 30,000 vehicles pass through it every day, around 40 percent of which are trucks.
