Saxony continues to hold direct stakes in 31 companies. As of December 31, 2023, the Free State represented a nominal capital of 594.5 million euros, according to the latest investment report from the Ministry of Finance. The majority of this is held by the Sächsische Aufbaubank (SAB, 500 million euros) and the Kreditanstalt für Wiederaufbau (KfW, around 40.2 million euros). In third place is Leipziger Messe (around 25.6 million euros).
The state is the majority shareholder in 19 companies, 14 of which are 100 percent publicly owned. In addition to SAB, these include, for example, Sächsische Binnenhäfen Oberelbe GmbH, Staatliche Porzellan-Manufaktur Meissen GmbH and Landesbühnen Sachsen GmbH.
According to the report, the Free State aims to promote the common good with its investments. The key objectives include strengthening the economic and scientific location as well as preserving and promoting cultural identity and diversity.
"The associated companies fulfill important public service tasks," says Finance Minister Christian Piwarz (CDU) in the foreword. As around two thirds of Saxony's population live in rural areas, the Free State's holdings are also present there.
