An Institute for Midwifery has been founded in Leipzig. The new institution forms the umbrella for the three specialist areas of midwifery science, obstetrics and practice and provides support "all around birth", Leipzig University announced. "It will make an important contribution to child development and the well-being of mothers and families," said Prof. Jens-Karl Eilers, Vice-Rector for Excellence Development at Leipzig University.
The Bachelor of Science in Midwifery is the first dual degree course at Leipzig University. It was offered for the first time at the Faculty of Medicine in the summer semester of 2021. The first class of academically trained midwives will graduate this fall. In the future, the institute will also offer courses for the recognition of professional qualifications for midwives from third countries.
