Despite a number of challenges, Saxony's Minister of Agriculture Georg-Ludwig von Breitenbuch believes that the Saxon food industry is in a robust position. This is shown by the latest figures, the CDU politician said in a statement at the Saxon state conference at the Green Week in Berlin.
"Outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease is a major concern"
According to the figures, the industry generated a turnover of 8 billion euros last year. This was 2.4 percent more than in 2023. In addition, the food trade generated a turnover of 0.8 billion euros.
However, the food industry is struggling with increased input prices, a shortage of skilled workers, bureaucratic burdens and disruptions in supply chains due to extreme weather events, among other things, said von Breitenbuch. "Currently, the outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease is also a major concern for farms and for us."
Combining regional products and culinary delights with tourism
Von Breitenbuch warned of enormous economic damage as a result of export restrictions, especially for the dairy industry. He announced that the Ministry of Social Affairs would be holding talks with the industry this week on further steps and measures.
