The load-bearing capacity of the bridge on the B101 is so endangered that demolition is the only option. The closure affects not only car traffic but also rail traffic.

After a special inspection, the B 101 bridge in the south of Großenhain (district of Meißen) will be closed to traffic with immediate effect. The structure can no longer be opened to traffic, which is why the demolition of the bridge is being prepared at short notice, according to the State Office for Road Construction and Transport. The start is already planned for Thursday.

"The condition of the structure, existing cracks and samples taken indicate a risk to the load-bearing capacity," the press release states. The immediate closure is intended to ensure the safety of all road users and rail traffic passing under the bridge.

Motorized traffic will be diverted via the S 81 to Lenz via Geißlitz on to Großdobritz, then via the S 177 to Meißen and then via the B 101 via Ockrilla, Gävernitz and Priestewitz back to Großenhain. The opposite direction will be routed in the same way.

Dresden-Berlin rail link has to be rerouted

The Dresden-Berlin rail link is also affected by the full closure. It has to be rerouted via a different route. Work is currently underway to ensure that the railroad line can be reopened. The possible course of the demolition work has therefore already been agreed in advance with Deutsche Bahn, among others.

Following the partial collapse of the Carola Bridge in September, the Free State is taking a close look at bridges of the same type along federal and state roads. The focus is on 19 structures in particular, including the B101 bridge, which will now be demolished. The first result of the special inspections was the closure of the Bad Schandau Elbe bridge on 7 November due to longitudinal cracks in the so-called lower span, another bridge was closed there at the beginning of December.
