The solar manufacturer Meyer Burger says it is considering closing its plant in Freiberg, Saxony. The Swiss company presented a plan on Wednesday to reduce "unsustainable losses" in Europe and focus on the USA. "Part of the plan would unfortunately be the closure of the plant in Freiberg, Germany, as early as the beginning of April 2024."

In view of the deteriorating European market environment, solar production in the region is no longer sustainable at full scale for the time being. The plant in Freiberg is the largest solar module production facility in Europe. 500 employees would be affected.

A final decision would have to be made by mid-February, the company added - "unless sufficient measures are taken to create fair competitive conditions in Europe, for example through resilience measures". Solar cell production in Bitterfeld-Wolfen in Saxony-Anhalt is to continue and support the ramp-up of module production in the USA.
