Saxon wood is in great demand: whether for furniture, veneers or musical instruments - the best logs are offered at a special auction every year. Interested parties come from far and wide.

Saxon forest owners are once again benefiting from the sale of high-quality timber, but have recorded a drop in revenue compared to the previous year. According to the state enterprise Sachsenforst, an average of 508 euros per cubic meter was paid at the timber submission - a kind of auction - in the Dresden Heath. This is around 13 percent less than in the previous year, but almost 5 percent higher than the price in 2022.

A total of 500 so-called value timber logs were sold for 391,431 euros - almost 57,000 euros less than in the previous year. During the tender, interested parties submit written bids after inspecting the wood. The highest bidder is then awarded the respective log.

Oak wood dominates the market

The valuable logs from the submission are still in high demand from the timber industry. In particular, the English oak as the main offer with 417 cubic meters continues to achieve a very high price of 717 euros per cubic meter, said the head of the forestry operations department at Sachsenforst, Thomas Rother. Oak remains the trend tree species with the highest average prices. Very good results were also achieved for larch and Douglas fir.

Platform for high-quality logs

"Once again this year, very high-quality timber from Saxon forests was offered at the submission organized by Sachsenforst," said Forestry Minister Georg-Ludwig von Breitenbuch (CDU). For private and corporate forest owners in particular, the submission offered an important platform for timber sales.

"The proceeds can in turn benefit Saxony's forests by being invested in repairing forest damage and reforestation," emphasized von Breitenbuch. The wood is used to make "high-quality and durable wood products such as fine veneers, furniture or musical instruments".
