In Saxony's popular winter sports resorts, accommodation is well booked. In the Ore Mountains, there is free capacity for last-minute bookings, especially outside the winter sports resorts, according to Claudia Brödner, spokesperson for the Ore Mountains Tourism Association. In Altenberg and Oberwiesenthal, on the other hand, there are only a few vacancies for families. The winter vacations in Saxony begin on February 17 and last until March 1.
The less wintry weather of recent weeks has not stopped holidaymakers in Vogtland from making their plans. Dorina Wießner from the Vogtland Tourism Association said that the pre-booking situation was particularly good near the Schöneck and Erbach ski resorts. "But there is still free capacity." It is advisable to enquire directly with the hosts.
Good omens on the ski slopes
For skiers, the signs are good so far. According to Brödner, winter sports conditions are currently good on the Fichtelberg, in Eibenstock and in Altenberg. Thanks to the snowmaking systems, the slopes there can even survive a few warmer days.
Schöneck and Erbach in Vogtland also offer good slope conditions, according to Wießner. The hope is that the frost will hold off at night until the vacations so that it stays that way. "We are optimistic at the moment," said Wießner.
Hosts in both the Ore Mountains and the Vogtland are hoping that the winter weather will return with enough snow, despite alternative offers such as museums, hiking routes and indoor activities. Winter conditions in particular would invite last-minute travelers to take a vacation, said Brödner. Many would also spontaneously pick up the phone if the weather was right, said Wießner. "This is a challenge for hosts, as planning reliability is simply very, very low."
