Whooping cough has been rampant in Saxony for months. The disease is highly contagious and easily transmitted when coughing, sneezing or talking - and there is a risk of pneumonia.

In the past year, the authorities in Saxony have registered significantly more cases of whooping cough. Current statistics from the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) in Berlin show a total of 1,701 registered cases from January to the end of November. The number has thus increased more than tenfold compared to the same period in 2023 with 107 cases. The higher level was already apparent in the middle of the year, with children, teenagers and young adults particularly affected.

Highly contagious respiratory disease

Pertussis is a highly contagious respiratory disease and is transmitted via droplet infection when coughing, sneezing or speaking. Infants and older people in particular are at risk of a severe course. The Standing Committee on Vaccination therefore recommends basic immunization in the first year of life and boosters in primary school and later in adulthood.
