With the end of the Christmas vacations, the number of flu cases in Saxony increases significantly - as does the number of deaths.

With the start of the seasonal flu epidemic at the beginning of January and the end of the Christmas vacations, reports of respiratory illnesses are on the rise. The incidence is dominated by influenza viruses, with the number of registered cases increasing from week to week. According to the latest report from the State Investigation Institute (LUA), there were 1,794 cases in the third week of January - an increase of 42 percent compared to the previous week. Adults in particular are affected. And there were two more deaths.

In contrast, coronavirus infections, which dominated until the end of 2024, are on the decline with 299 newly reported cases. They continue to be detected primarily in adults and the elderly. The number of reported respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infections rose slightly with 235 reported cases - mainly affecting young children.

Almost 190 deaths from respiratory diseases

Since the official start of the season at the beginning of October 2024, 4,809 cases of influenza, 13,814 coronavirus infections and 1,007 RSV infections have been reported nationwide as of 19 January, as well as 188 deaths. According to the data, 175 people between the ages of 46 and 97 died from a coronavirus infection, twelve people between the ages of 48 and 92 died from influenza A and one 92-year-old died from an RSV infection.
