Saxony's sports clubs have more than 700,000 members - around 30,000 were added within a year, as the Saxon Ministry of the Interior announced in Dresden on Monday, citing figures from the State Sports Association (LSB). There are currently more than 4300 sports clubs in the Free State. Almost every second child between the ages of 7 and 14 is now a member of a sports club.
Sport Minister Armin Schuster (CDU) described Saxony as a land of sport. In addition to offering regular exercise, involvement in a sports club "creates an awareness of social cohesion and responsibility. This is precisely why financial support for sport is particularly important to me," explained Schuster according to the ministry.
