The wait will soon be over for ski fans on the Fichtelberg: the slopes will open just in time for the weekend.

The ski season begins in Saxony's largest ski resort in Oberwiesenthal on Friday. The lifts opened and the slopes are in top condition for skiing and snowboarding, the Oberwiesenthal lift company announced on Facebook.

According to the operator, there is currently 15 centimetres of snow on the Fichtelberg. Fresh snow could be added on Friday: Above 400 meters, it should snow according to the forecast of the German Weather Service in Saxony. Temperatures between 0 and 4 degrees are expected in the mountains.

The first ski resorts in Saxony had already started the season last week. In Altenberg in the Osterzgebirge mountains, the ski lifts opened after snow cannons ensured good piste conditions. The ski slopes also opened further west in the Eibenstock ski arena. In Oberwiesenthal, the season initially began without ski operations.

There are 67 ski resorts and more than 40 ski lifts in Saxony - most of which are operated by private clubs. With six lifts, Oberwiesenthal is the largest ski resort in the Free State.
