Tens of thousands of people celebrated the official start of the Capital of Culture year in Chemnitz. Musicians such as Bosse, Dilla, Paula Carolina, Omar Massa and Fritz Kalkbrenner performed at a large stage show at the Karl Marx Monument. The gala was opened in the open air with spherical brass sounds played from the surrounding skyscraper roofs. There was also dancing on stage - from ballet to hip hop.
Chemnitz and the entire region will be in the spotlight in 2025, said Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier at the opening show. And the whole of Europe is watching. "Culture unites. Chemnitz can send out the signal of a new togetherness this year. The signal: We are building the future together. "
On the opening day, in addition to a ceremony with around 700 invited guests, there were cultural programs on several stages in the city centre. As a symbol of working together and a reference to the rich industrial history, a historic locomotive was pulled by 120 people. Visitors were invited to party in clubs in the city until the early hours of the morning.
