After a Douglas fir from Torgau, this year a tree from the Vogtland region towers over the Leipzig Christmas market.

The tree for this year's Christmas market in Leipzig comes from the Vogtland region. After a tree from Torgau was used last year, this year a spruce from the Vogtland near Klingenthal was chosen, according to the city of Leipzig's market office.

The tree is said to be around 60 years old, 20 meters tall and weighs four tons. The owner had offered the giant himself, as it would have had to be felled soon anyway for safety and age reasons due to its size and location on a slope.

The tree is to be erected on November 7 and decorated with 300 red and gold baubles and around 3,000 lights. The Leipzig Christmas market is scheduled to open from November 26 to December 23. However, the Christmas tree is to remain in place until January 3.
