Jutta Hipp (1925-2003), a jazz musician from Leipzig, will be honored for the second time with a prize named after her. The award is available in the categories of improvisation and composition, announced the Saxony Jazz Association. For individuals, the limit is 1,000 euros, for two or more artists there is a total of 3,000 euros. A prizewinners' concert will be organized for the winners.
Jutta Hipp would have been 100 years old in February this year. She moved to the USA in the 1950s and worked with various jazz greats there. She was the first white female musician to be signed to the Blue Note label. Hipp is considered a pioneer for women in jazz. The prize named after her was first awarded in 2023 and went to pianist Olga Reznichenko and saxophonist Matti Oehl.
The Saxony Jazz Association plans to award the prize every two years. The aim of the award is not only to raise awareness of the scene in Saxony, but also to honor a great pianist, it said. Applications can be submitted until March 15. The award-winning concert will take place on May 22 at the Malzhaus Plauen.
