Saxony households produced almost as much waste in 2023 as in the previous year. In contrast, small successes were recorded for separately collected organic waste.

Saxony's households generated around 1.6 million tons of waste last year. This corresponds to around 395 kilograms of household waste per capita, according to the State Office for the Environment, Agriculture and Geology in its waste balance sheet. This means that the Saxons produced roughly the same amount of waste as in the previous year.

On average, every Saxon disposed of 118 kilograms of residual waste, 174 kilograms of recyclables, 27 kilograms of bulky waste and 75 kilograms of organic waste last year.

According to the data, slightly less residual waste and bulky waste was generated in the state. On the other hand, separately collected organic waste increased by three kilograms due to more garden waste being collected. According to the authority, separated organic waste is a valuable resource for generating fertilizer, electricity and heat. According to the authority, one tonne of organic waste yields around 350 to 450 kilograms of compost, which in turn can replace artificial fertilizer. In addition, an average of 75 cubic meters of biomethane can be obtained from one tonne of biowaste to generate electricity and heat.
