There are around 30,000 garages in Chemnitz, many of which were built during the GDR era. In the Capital of Culture year, the city wants to make the otherwise unseen visible - and the garages are also in focus.

In the Capital of Culture year 2025, Chemnitz is focusing on garages as private retreats and creative spaces. On Saturday (12.30 pm), a trail will be opened. At ten stations, interested visitors can explore Chemnitz's garage landscape by bus, streetcar or on foot and talk to some of their owners.

In addition to several garage yards, this also includes what is probably the oldest garage in the city - the coach house of Villa Esche, built in 1902/03 according to plans by Henry van de Velde. The historic elevated garage from 1928 is also worth discovering. In addition to the exhibition of the vehicle museum, the "Spare Parts Warehouse" installation awaits visitors there. The artist Martin Maleschka has arranged found objects from garages as a kind of living archive. These include vehicle parts and tools as well as magazines and an old license plate.
