The Lausitz Festival in East Saxony is once again offering theater, dance and music starting this weekend. One of the highlights is the solo performance of Franz Kafka's "The Trial" by actor Philipp Hochmair ("Freud", "The Manns") on September 8 in Weißwasser - director Claus Peymann had to cancel his Kafka production for health reasons.
The program of the fifth edition of the European art festival under the motto "Anderselbst" (Different Self) includes around 60 events at extraordinary locations in southern Brandenburg and eastern Saxony until 14 September - from classical music, jazz, film and literature to art, song recitals and philosophical discussions.
Kicking off with Shakespeare's "Othello"
This Sunday, Leonhard Burkhardt ("Tatort", "SOKO Linz") and Götz Schubert ("Brecht", "Wolfsland") will face off as Othello and Iago respectively. Directed by Marcel Kohler, the masterpiece by playwright William Shakespeare and his only surviving literary manuscript "The Strangers" will be performed in a former glass factory in Weißwasser, according to the organizers.
Beethoven's 9th Symphony to sing along. Symphony to sing along to
On the evening before, the 4th movement of Ludwig van Beethoven's 9th Symphony with the "Ode to Joy", whose melody has been the official European anthem since 1985, will be performed in the European city of Görlitz under the title "Freude schöner Lausitzfunken". Singing along is encouraged at the performance by the Neue Lausitzer Philharmonie with international soloists and a specially formed choir.
The program also includes a staged reading by Czech author Radka Denemarková at Görlitzer Bahnhof, a concert by Venezuelan pianist Gabriela Montero and an exhibition of photography and paintings at the New Castle in Bad Muskau.
