Tourism, like other industries, is desperately looking for young staff. A campaign has been recruiting young talent in Saxony since 2021. The first fruits are now visible.

Saxony's campaign for young staff in the tourism industry is showing initial success. The decline in training contracts has been halted and reversed, and the "Tourism Talent for Saxony" initiative is having an impact, announced the Ministry of Tourism and the state tourism association in Wilsdruff. The aim of the campaign, which was launched in 2021, is to inspire young people to pursue a career in hotels, leisure parks or guesthouses.

According to the ministry, there has been a decline in apprenticeships in tourism in the Free State since 2015. The increasing competition in the economy for young workers has been given an additional boost by the coronavirus pandemic. In 2020 alone, the number of apprenticeships in the hospitality industry fell by almost 25 percent, it said. In 2021, there were still 2,784 training contracts in the tourism professions, three years later there were already 3,294 - an increase of 18 percent.

"Tourism is an important economic factor for us in Saxony, and we want to continue to shape it successfully in the future," emphasized Tourism Minister Barbara Klepsch (CDU). It is good that more young people are once again taking up a profession in the industry. Nevertheless, it remains a major challenge to recruit enough skilled workers. This task can only be mastered together with the industry and the associations.
