The AfD in Saxony still sees reserves in the "patriotic camp" and wants to tap into these better in future elections. In an important election with an "elephant race" between two major parties, voters must be persuaded to give their votes to the party with the best chances, said AfD General Secretary Jan Zwerg. Votes had also gone to the Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance (BSW) and the Free Saxons. Like the AfD, the Free Saxons are classified as far-right by the Office for the Protection of the Constitution.
He congratulated Michael Kretschmer from the CDU on his election victory. According to Zwerg, his party is always ready for talks and has good contacts with the CDU. In Saxony, there is a desire for a stable, conservative government - the CDU and AfD could form an extremely stable government. They are not that far apart in terms of content and there is a great deal of overlap.
The people of Saxony do not want a firewall, said the AfD man. At the same time, he signaled his willingness to tolerate a minority government of the CDU and SPD.
Zwerg spoke of a wonderful result for the AfD. They had only finished just behind the CDU, won 28 direct mandates and gained 200,000 votes. Overall, the party was satisfied, but there was still room for improvement. "There are still reserves that we can tap into - next time." The "patriotic camp" in Saxony is larger.
