The budget of the city of Chemnitz is in trouble. The deficit this year amounts to 65.5 million euros, according to the city administration. This is due to the price increases caused by the various crises. Chemnitz is in a similar situation to many other municipalities in Germany.
The head of the finance department, Ralph Burghart, announced that all expenditure would have to be put to the test. Effective measures were needed to consolidate the budget. Chemnitz has the highest expenditure for personnel and social tasks. The costs for the maintenance of buildings and roads had also risen. The need for subsidies for municipal companies such as the transport companies and theaters is critical.
