Commemorative event in Dresden on the anniversary of the Russian invasion of Ukraine

Dresden's Neumarkt square will once again be the venue for a commemorative event next Saturday to mark the anniversary of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. A year ago, the square in front of the Frauenkirche was already used to commemorate the suffering of the people in Ukraine. In addition to representatives of several political parties, the Ukrainian community in Dresden will also have their say, the organizers announced on Monday. Following the rally, which will end with a minute's silence for the victims of the war, the lower church of Dresden's Frauenkirche will be a place of mourning and remembrance.

"We ask all Dresdeners to continue to show solidarity with Ukraine. We call for participation in our event, also to demonstrate: Dresden has learned from history - against the aggressor and in solidarity with those attacked," a call for participation in the rally read. Donations to support humanitarian projects in Ukraine will also be collected on this occasion.

The Russian war of aggression against Ukraine began on February 24, 2022. Since then, the conflict has continued with increasing severity and destruction. Exact casualty figures are not known. Several million people from Ukraine became war refugees and found refuge in Germany, among other places.
