The Saxon FDP is in danger of failing to reach the five per cent threshold in the state elections on 1 September for the third time in a row and is therefore mobilizing voters. Saxony needs "a strong voice from the center", the Liberals announced in Dresden on Tuesday.
The party is looking with increasing concern at the CDU in Saxony and its possible opening up to coalitions with parties on the political fringes. "A Saxon state parliament in which only the CDU, BSW and AfD are represented would be the worst case scenario for the Free State of Saxony. Saxony can only remain governable with a strong center," explained lead candidate Robert Malorny. A governing coalition with the BSW would be a "reversal of the fight for freedom of 1989/90".
According to Malorny, the FDP Saxony has changed fundamentally over the past five years. "It is running with a team of Saxons who are fully engaged in their professional lives and know from there where things are grinding to a halt in Saxony." On September 1, they would move directly from the workbench or their desk to state politics and tackle problems such as the education crisis, the imbalance in migration policy or the crisis-ridden economy and fight for solutions.
The Saxon FDP recently achieved two and three percent in election polls. In 2009, it was still at 10 percent and then formed a coalition with the CDU. Five years later, however, the Liberals were punished with 3.8 percent of the second votes and also failed to re-enter the state parliament in 2019 with 4.5 percent.
