The road to a new government in Saxony has taken another step forward: after "introductory talks", the party committees of the CDU, SPD and BSW now have the final say on whether there will be exploratory talks.

In Saxony, the party committees of the CDU, SPD and the Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance (BSW) are to decide on exploratory talks to form a government. After several talks in a row, representatives of the parties did not want to put a final check mark behind the decision; first, the talks held so far are to be evaluated in the executive committees.

The parties announced that they had held "intensive and constructive discussions on important state policy issues" over the past three days. "Similarities, but also differences and the need for further discussion were identified." A decision will now be made on whether to begin exploratory talks on this basis. Exploratory talks are already underway in the two neighboring states of Brandenburg and Thuringia.

In the state elections on September 1, the CDU in Saxony was the strongest party with 31.9 percent of the vote, ahead of the AfD (30.6 percent). As the CDU categorically rules out an alliance with the AfD, only an alliance between the CDU, BSW (11.8%) and SPD (7.3%) - i.e. a "blackberry coalition" - is an option for a majority government. A continuation of the old coalition of CDU, Greens (5.1 percent) and SPD is not enough.
