Saxony has received a lot of support from others in times of need, such as during the devastating floods of the Elbe in 2002 and 2013. Now the Free State is helping people in need in Ukraine.

Saxony has launched another aid shipment for Ukraine. A truck is to bring 36 power generators and medical equipment to the Kharkiv region, the State Chancellery announced on Monday. The delivery, worth 55,000 euros, is part of the ongoing support for the Free State's partner region in eastern Ukraine. The German Red Cross is helping in both regions.

"Saxony continues to show solidarity with the people of Ukraine. During my visit to Ukraine in March, I was able to discuss what is urgently needed on the ground directly with the leadership of our partner region Kharkiv. In this way, we can guarantee effective aid for the civilian population suffering from the Russian war of aggression," explained State Chancellery Head Oliver Schenk (CDU).

The delivery follows a request from the Ukrainian Red Cross in Kharkiv, it said. The reason for the specific need was the intensification of attacks by Russian troops towards Kharkiv since May 2024 and the increased shelling of energy infrastructure. Accordingly, the Saxon State Chancellery has purchased 36 generators with an output of 7 kilowatts each for civilian use. In addition, medical supplies such as bandages and burn sprays from the Dresden University Hospital were also provided.

During his trip to Ukraine in March this year, Schenk also signed a declaration of intent on an official regional partnership between Saxony and Kharkiv. Among other things, the agreement aims to create investment opportunities for reconstruction in the region. The partnership also provides for the establishment of municipal partnerships and an increased cross-border exchange of experience in the field of public administration.
