Saxony's Minister President Michael Kretschmer is convinced that he will lead the next state government. "It has to be the Saxon Union. We are here in Saxony, we will not be talked into it. We are going our own Saxon way," said the CDU politician after going to the ballot box in Dresden this morning.
The polling stations for the state parliamentary elections in Saxony have been open since 8.00 am. Around 3.3 million people can cast their votes by 6 p.m. to elect the state parliament for the next five years. For weeks, the AfD and CDU have been in a neck-and-neck race for first place. The Sahra Wagenknecht coalition (BSW) has clearly established itself as the third strongest force in the polls with ratings of up to 15 percent. The SPD, Left Party and Greens must therefore fear for their re-entry into the state parliament.
In the state election five years ago, the CDU came first with 32.1 percent of the second votes, ahead of the AfD (27.5 percent). Prime Minister Kretschmer governs in a coalition with the Greens and SPD.
