According to Interior Minister Armin Schuster, the CDU/CSU in Saxony wants to do things differently in the next coalition. "We want to form a government with a contract that is new, that is completely different," he said at the CDU's election party in the state parliament.
"I would like to end up with a coalition agreement that is acclaimed in a referendum and only then at the party conference." This would give him the chance to win back AfD voters who are not extreme in five years' time. He has respect for their voting decision. "But I would like to have them back," said Schuster. "I think you have to do a few things differently for that."
According to the projections, the CDU could win the election just ahead of the AfD. In purely mathematical terms, it could form an alliance with the SPD and BSW.
Politics before party politics
Schuster emphasized that his first job is as Minister of the Interior. "We don't make policies that please one party." In terms of migration policy, he said, the aim was to better manage the border situation in the initial reception facilities and the task of integration. "That is my goal."
