Comprehensive healthcare, free lunches at daycare centers and schools, fair wages and affordable rents - these are the issues with which the Left Party wants to win over voters.

In its campaign for the state elections on September 1, the Left Party in Saxony is focusing on social justice. "We want to make the state fairer," said party chairwoman and lead candidate Susanne Schaper on Thursday in Dresden at the launch of the campaign. The focus is on good healthcare across the board, free healthy lunches in daycare centers and schools, fair wages and good working conditions as well as affordable rents.

Her party has homework to do and has understood this based on the survey results, said Schaper. "We want to use the next three months to show the people of Saxony that it makes sense to vote for us on September 1 and that we have the best proposals to offer them real social security."

Co-chair Stefan Hartmann also sees the party's current poor election and poll results as a task. It is about presence and clarity of content. "Our biggest competitor is ourselves." The Left must show what it stands for. This is not a question for another party, it is something we have to answer ourselves. Hartmann does not see any substantive competition in the newly founded Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance (BSW), as it has placed itself relatively far to the right in Saxony.

The Left Party won just 4.9 percent of the vote in the European elections in Saxony on June 9, compared to 11.7 percent five years earlier. In the local elections, the party fell from 13.6 percent to 6.9 percent. In the 2019 state elections, the party achieved 12.3% and is currently the third-largest parliamentary group after the CDU (44 seats) and AfD (34 seats) with 14 seats. According to current poll results, however, it could be close to entering the state parliament in the election on September 1.
