Dierks urges parties to be willing to compromise

Saxony's state parliament president Alexander Dierks has appealed to the willingness of all parliamentary groups to compromise in view of the lack of a majority in the governing coalition of CDU and SPD. The aim is to "establish a culture of solutions based on decent political debate and thus also set an example for a society that is probably more agitated than it has been for decades".

Dierks: There is no one ideal solution

Compromise is a successful model from 75 years of the Federal Republic of Germany that has been unjustly discredited, said Dierks. "It doesn't work without compromise. There is not just black and white, there is not one ideal path (...)." A solution must be found that reconciles different interests and is oriented towards the common good. This requires a spirit of compromise, a willingness to compromise.

Dierks was referring to the new political constellation in the Free State. For the first time in the history of the Free State, there is a state government that does not have its own majority in the state parliament. "This is new territory for all of us. Expectations are high." There are also skeptical voices. This expectation should give us the strength to take on this responsibility. Dierks spoke of the "dawn of a new political era".

Landtag should be a parliament of opportunities

According to the President, the Landtag should be a "parliament of opportunities and of shaping the future". Parliament represents the conflicts that exist in a diverse society. "That's what we are elected for." We need the debate, we are competitors, sometimes opponents, but never enemies. It is about conducting the debate decently and with respect.

The President of the state parliament also recalled the terrorist attack in Magdeburg. He expressed his full sympathy to the victims and their families. "It is acts like these that repeatedly put the cohesion of our society to the test." However, such events also put democracy's ability to act to the test. He is convinced that liberal democracy has the strength to overcome such challenges.
