Saxony's Finance Minister Christian Piwarz (CDU) is preparing the Free State for financially difficult times. At the same time, he called on all parliamentary groups in the state parliament to be willing to compromise when introducing the 2025/2026 double budget. In times of a minority government, the deliberations would be more difficult and energy-sapping than ever before, he said.
"Not everything that was possible in the past can be financed under the given circumstances," the minister emphasized. Painful but necessary decisions had been made. "These cuts hurt. They provoke criticism. I understand that." However, honesty also means pointing out that the need for consolidation will remain for the next few years.
Piwarz spoke of a "transitional budget". "We are buying ourselves time to prepare the necessary structural reforms. The key question we need to ask in future is: what tasks does the state have and what tasks can it no longer afford?"
