Middle Saxony's district administrator Dirk Neubauer (non-party) is stepping down from his post even earlier than initially announced. He has decided to relinquish his office as early as September 30, the district office announced.
Originally, he did not want to step down until after the election of a new district administrator in March 2025. Until a successor has been appointed, first deputy Lothar Beier will take over the office.
Neubauer justified his earlier resignation with new hostilities. "The discussions and debates, some of which were very heated, as well as the sometimes very personally defamatory criticism in the past few days have prompted me to quit earlier in order to avoid any possible damage to the district, the administration and the office." An orderly handover to his successor would have been important to him. "Unfortunately, this is not possible under these circumstances," said Neubauer.
The district administrator announced his resignation in July - after just two years in office. He justified this with a "diffuse threat situation from the right-wing corner" and a lack of opportunities to assert himself against a conservative majority in the region. Neubauer is the only one of the current district councillors in Saxony who did not come into office on a CDU ticket, but was supported by the Left, SPD and Greens.
It is not yet clear when a new district administrator will be elected. The district administration office has proposed January 26, 2025 for the first round of voting and February 16, 2025 for a possible second round. The district council must decide on the dates. It meets on August 14.
