The party resignation of Sahra Wagenknecht and several followers has not yet led to a bloodletting in the Left Party in Saxony. As the state executive board announced on request, 25 entries and seven resignations were registered by Wednesday morning. "However, it must be pointed out that these are mainly those who have contacted the state association directly," explained press spokesman William Rambow. Entries and withdrawals that are declared to the federal association usually take a few days to be reported to the state associations. However, experience shows that a large number of people declare such a step to the state association.
The party leadership of the Saxon Left had called the split from the party reckless to the more than 200 employees in the Bundestag faction and their families. The background is the possible loss of the Left's parliamentary group status. "It is particularly irresponsible in a social situation that requires a strong Left all the more. Whoever weakens it for selfish motives will soon realize that these motives are not a basis for the lasting success of a party," party leader Susanne Schaper and co-chair Steffen Hartmann recently stressed.
Wagenknecht had announced on Monday that she would leave the Left Party and found her own party. "We look forward and focus on our work on the streets and in the parliaments," Schaper and Hartmann commented on the decision. They do not want to get involved in a "dirty war of roses" with Wagenknecht. The left remains "the right address for all who care about justice and solidarity for all people living in the country, the peaceful resolution of conflicts, social climate protection and the determined fight against the extreme right," they said.
Saxony long provided the largest state association of the left nationwide. As of the end of 2022, however, the comrades in North Rhine-Westphalia and also in Berlin were more numerous. The Left is Saxony currently comes to 6108 members.
